"The Short Story"

This essay is alternately interesting, infuriating, hilarious, and idiotic. Fundamentally it's difficult to take a writer seriously who aims to survey the entirety of modern American fiction through the goddamn BASS anthology, but I dunno, what do you think?

  1. My head almost exploded when he claimed that the short story is a fundamentally unironic form. wtf??

I thought he was most persuasive re guilt. I've noticed that many of the writers on HTMLGIANT seem to think that writing is inherently selfish, and that it is not "real work." I don't get it! If you need to write, then I say it's selfish not to. It seems like some kind of American ethos to conflate exuberance with indulgence, or folly. Be large! Absorb, ingest, envelop!

Funny that he mentions "Stone Animals" and "The Cousins," as those are the only stories I've liked from BASS in the last few years.
