But It Really Happens This Way

Had a depressing back-and-forth with my students today in which I asked them to describe what was "routine" in the story versus what was "different about this day"; they described everything that happened and then gave reasons that this seemed realistic; I said it was indeed all very realistic but that I was asking what was it about this day that demanded a story be told; a student said "you mean the narrative occasion" and I said "yes, what is the narrative occasion" and they were like "but I can totally see it happening this way."

I guess file this under Fiction Conversations I Started Too Soon.
